Macmillan Physical Education for QCE – Units 1&2 and 3&4.

How long have you been in the education industry?
I began studying in 1974 and teaching in 1978, and I haven’t really stopped learning since. Our profession relies on life-long learning!

How have you noticed your teaching style change over the years? Why do you think this is?
In PE there has been a significant shift from a traditional ‘skills and drills’-based approach to a focus on problem-solving, decision-making and critical-thinking, through a constraints-based approach and Game Sense. I discovered these more contemporary pedagogies through my professional reading and learning through ACHPER, our peak professional body. I have been lucky to have mentors like Dr Shane Pill, Dr Brendan Moy and Associate Professor Ian Renshaw who I can share ideas with.

What is the importance to you of good educational resources?
Good educational resources are crucial to getting innovative ideas and clarity into classrooms. They are also helpful for developing teaching and learning processes, and strategies to assist students and teachers.

What has been your favourite part of writing an education resource?
Collaborating with amazing colleagues and sharing ideas about our collective passion: our subject area.

What is your favourite part of being a teacher?
Working with my students – each of them inspires me to the best I can be.

What are three things people wouldn’t know about you?
I grew up in the Western District of Victoria, I went to Boarding School, and my first car was a Morris Major. I paid $320 of my hard-earned savings for it!

What do you like to do when you’re not teaching (or writing)?

I love to cook. My favourites are Thai, Malaysian, Sichuan and Vietnamese cuisines.

Who are three people, living or dead, you’d love to have dinner with?
Barack Obama – such an inspiring human being and great communicator. Nelson Mandela – to tap into his wisdom and courage. Julia Gillard – her work to support the mental health of young people is fantastic.

What is your favourite book and why?
Our most recent textbook! It’s our best work yet, filled with valuable resources and engaging features to assist students and teachers. I love the process of seeing our work coming together to achieve a quality finished product we can be proud of.

Do you follow a sports team?
Geelong Football Club in the AFL. Go Cats!
