Shirley Gilbert

Ms Shirley Gilbert is a Gunditjmara woman and Lecturer in the School of Education at Western Sydney University. She has worked in Aboriginal Education for over 30 years and is a recognised authority in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander curriculum research and development. She has held a number of roles on advisory Boards of TAFE, NSW Dept of Education, NSW AECG, NSW Board of Studies/NESA, CSIRO, Catholic Education as well as community organisations. She currently serves as the national president of the Australian Indigenous Lecturers in Teacher Education Association (AILiTEA). Ms Gilbert has worked very successfully in remote schools in the Northern Territory to improve curriculum delivery through the use of culturally responsive pedagogies. Currently she is undertaking a PhD which examines secondary preservice teachers understanding and embedding Aboriginal ways of knowing into their classroom possibilities.
